Free To Go – Felton Contacted By Other Clubs

The Phone Is Ringing For Raymond

It looks like Raymond Felton will start to packing his bags. The 2010 Free Agency Freakout has begun, and it doesn’t appear that Michael Jordan’s Bobcats are all that excited about the whole ordeal.

ESPN.com reports that seven teams have contact Raymond Felton about lacing up his point guard shoes for a new contract. The story makes it clear that none of those seven teams are based in Charlotte.

When compared to Jeff McInnis and Sean May, Raymond Felton shines as the star of former Tarheels to play for Charlotte. If Felton leaves, the Cats will be scrambling to fill their obligatory Former-UNC player spot of the roster. Maybe, that’s what the Marcus Ginyard summer league tryout is all about.

    Alright Dr E,

We've added some additional destinations for the Raymond Poll…

    Indiana?

    Toronto?

    LA?

    It ain't so.

It'll be T.J. Ford, Monta Ellis or Ramon Sessions.

Monta Ellis I want to see MJ pull off this miracle. TJ Ford no thanks, and Sessions only if we can get Al Jefferson in a deal. I would love to see Jefferson and Sessions in Bobcat blue. I think the Twolves are trying to give Jefferson away as crazy as that seams.

The teams listed were New York, New Jersey, Miami, Dallas, Memphis & Indiana. If I had to guess the 7th is probably the Lakers.

Memphis probably pulled themselves out with the max deal to Gay.

    I'm with ASChin…it'll be Ford.

    Yippee.

Also, last I saw NY, NJ and Miami were his top choices…and all have space.

I am curious on why NJ is interested since they have Harris. Maybe they're wanting to have less invested at the 1 so they can throw more to the big FAs?

i think the only realistic scenario that we have a shot at is TJ Ford…. as much as i dont want it.

we could have gotten Ellis last year in my opinion, but i find it impossible to pull off a reasonable deal this time around. i mean, weve pretty much ripped of the Warriors for the last two years (Brandon Wright for J-Rich; Jax for Radmonavich and Bell). hard to imagine them taking more of our trash

Anyone think we should add Indiana to the poll? Who are these other teams? Lakers?

Its going to be a sad day in Charlotte when DJ augustin is the starting PG on opening day. Say it aint so.

Why's everyone so down on Ford?

Before he got to Indy (in the Jermaine O'Neal trade) he was a hell of a playmaker for Toronto and Milwaukee.

He gets to the line and can score. Like Felton, his biggest problem is that he can't shoot.

The one benefit to having Ford man the show for a year is his contract. He's only due $8.5 for the season rental and then you get another expiring (potentially $21 million coming off with he and Tyson together).

Raymond Felton for T.J. Ford is carbon neutral in my opinion.

To further the point on Sessions (I mention it in my upcoming post):

A Jefferson/Sessions deal would be godsend. You get a young starting PG on a great deal and the back to the basket post player that the team has lacked since Sean May played that one good game against Orlando four years ago.

Seems like both of those players are unwanted by the T'wolves and I wonder if Tyson and Nazr's expiring plus a first rounder would be enough to entice ShakaKahn to pull the trigger.

    July 1, 2010 at 10:34 pm #

Also, as ASChin mentioned, there are teams giving out dumb contracts to fairly mediocre players with little "upside" already. If Amir Johnson, Drew Gooden, Channing Frye are getting big deals, I wonder what David Lee is going go for?

Like the situation that the Bobcats had with no Draft picks, maybe it's good that Charlotte's capped out and don't have the ability to shoot themselves in the foot during Free Agency.

They probably would have signed Shaq and John Salmons to max deals.

    July 1, 2010 at 10:39 pm #

Oh and anybody else a tad bit nervous that after Amir Johnson, Drew Gooden and Channing Frye just signed deals north of $6 million a year that someone will come along and offer Tyrus Thomas (who is a better prospect than all of those guys) a 5 year deal averaging around $8 million per?

So, I caught the NBA TV "Decision 2010" broadcast last night and it's becoming evident that the there will be at least two major losers in the Free Agency hunt. Most likely, Cleveland will lose Lebron and be too late in the game to sign another top-tier star. Between NY, Miami, NJ, and Chicago, someone is going to miss out on a star, and it doesn't appear that either will be able to win/sign two max guys. Even if any of those clubs lock up a top player, they'll need to put a team around them – and that could benefit the Bobcats.

Charlotte should trade Cleveland, Chicago, NY, or Miami a Center or two (Mohammed / Chandler / Ajinca) in exchange for future picks, cash, and a patch at the PG position. This would allow the team to achieve the short and long-term goals of not slipping in progress this season, acquiring future assets in Draft picks, and freeing salary cap space (to seize great trade opportunities like Stephen Jackson last season).

Tyrus will get a big ugly deal from somebody unless we package him in a deal to Minny for Al and Ramon. That is our best, and really, a preferred option to get better and stay better during the remaining Crash/Jax years. Thomas is nice but no guarantees on how he'll develop. Jeez, we gave up a 1st for him, so we can't lose him to an offer sheet. If we have to match a long term deal I suppose we would, but then we are completely stuck with no cap room to speak of.

Out of all the people that got contracts that have been "agreed upon", I still hold to the idea that Joe Johnson is not worth max contract and somehow Kahn still loves Darko

Sorry I can't get too excited about Sessions + Jefferson. How many games did the T-Wolves win last year?

    July 2, 2010 at 9:10 am #

TJ Ford, the guy whose team is desperate for a PG…any PG…and was up til he became an expiring was desperate to move him yet couldn't give him away.

The guy who lost his job to Earl Watson.

He's a chucker, he doesn't help ball movement, he's slight and he's injury prone.

    Why wouldn't anyone want him?

Again, see "Misfit Toys, Island of" for an explaination. Ford is most definitely a candidate.

TJ also puts up numbers across the board, he cant shoot but either can Ray Felton.. He can get to basket and does all the little things. He works hard on defense just as larry wants. He would be nice rental

  19. Charlie
    July 3, 2010 at 5:13 am #

DJ can start for Bobcats, he just needs the confidence from Larry to do it. Bobcats need to sign-and-trade with the Pacers by giving up Felton and Mohammed expiring contract and the trade exception and Get Tyler Hansbrough (yeah i said it), TJ Ford, and a throw in such as Solomon Jones. Hansbrough gives bobcats their every year UNC player and a guy who will simply just work his but off. Imagine crashing the boards with Gerald and Tyler Hansbrough, the other team is bound to get injured or get a technical in some way.

Larry Brown is a hall of fame coach he wouldnt let Raymond go if he wasnt gona get a upgrade at PG

  21. Tyler
    July 3, 2010 at 8:01 am #

wat we need is a good PG like Allen Iverson or a rlly good veteran and then draft Seth Curry (Stephen Currys brother) out of Duke next year

  22. Charlie
    July 4, 2010 at 2:59 am #

Why would Seth Curry help us.. we have Jax and then Gerald.. Seth is a pure SG and has none of the PG skills that his brother has. With our first round pick next year we need to draft a a PG if DJ doesnt improve which i think he will or a PF because next year class is full of PG and PF so a pick between 10-20 will net us a good player. Seth Curry will not come out next year anyway, he will be like 7th man for Duke

  23. Tyler
    July 4, 2010 at 11:55 am #

okay dude srry geez just a suggestion but he is 6"1 so i just assumed he would be a PG in the NBA and he will be a senior next year he has to come out doesnt he? but all i know is Larry Brown knows what he is doing and i trust him to bring in the right guy even if somehow it is T.J. Ford

    Dr. E –

You can not blame the lack of success of the Timberwolves on Jefferson and Sessions.

The Timberwolves are not the same team as the Bobcats nor they have the same talent. They don't have mature players like: Stephen Jackson and Gerald Wallace, and they definetly don't have one of the best Coaches in the history of the NBA in Larry Brown. Also, the new owner alone, inspire a sense of respect that the Timberwolves don't have.

I tweeted it earlier and as I've thought about it, it could be the best deal the Bobcats could make this offseason:

Boston has a thing for Barbossa.

    Phoenix just lost Amare.

    Thus…

CLT sends Boris Diaw back to PHX,

    PHX sends Barbossa to BOS,

BOS sends Glen Davis and Rasheed's retiring to CLT.

Once 'Sheed officially retires, the 'Cats will have the additional funds (around $6 million) to offer Raymond a $5-$6 million/year contract. Done. Everybody happy.

Bobcats get a bruiser PF to pair with Tyrus and keep their PG from last season. PHX gets an Amare replacement in Diaw who has and can play all three frontcourt positions while Boston gets their bench scoring offseason target.

    Do it.

    ASChin –

Where do I sign for that deal to happen. Can we add Ajinca's expiring $1.5M somewhere in that equation? Just a thought!

  27. RobC
    July 6, 2010 at 5:27 am #

in addition, the Bobcats can then send:

Tyson Chandler's $12.6M expiring contract to Minnesota

And the Bobcats will get: Al Jefferson

Then sign Stephen Graham and Darius Miles to league minimum and split the MLE between Flip Murray and Craig Smith.

But that would be a great team:

    Felton/DJ/Murray

    Jackson/Henderson/Graham

    Wallace/Brown/Miles

    Thomas/Davis/Smith

    Jefferson/Nazr/Diop

  28. RobC
    July 6, 2010 at 5:31 am #

I forgot Ajinca, so Darius Miles might not be able to play for Larry Brown after all. I will take Craig Smith over Miles any day. The Team will be:

    Felton/DJ/Murray

    Jackson/Henderson/Graham

    Wallace/Brown/Smith

    Thomas/Davis/Ajinca

    Jefferson/Nazr/Diop

And the Cats will still have over $8.5M off the books next season in Nazr and Ajinca.

  29. ASChin

    RobC-

Yeah, I think we have a winner. It would all depend on Ainge agreeing to part with Big Baby and Rasheed's cap space (a BIG trade chip) in exchange for Barbossa. A team might have to throw something else back Danny's way in the form of a pick.

The subsequent move for Jefferson would be great but he's more of a 4 than a 5. Also don't like the frontcourt combo of Ty Thomas and Big Al defensively.

Hell, if you just made the one trade mentioned above, signed Felton, Stephen Graham and either Murray or Iverson, you'd have a hell of a team next year and win ten more games in the conference simply due to continuity.

    Felton/DJ/Murray or Iverson

    Jackson/Henderson

    Wallace/Brown/Graham

    Thomas/Davis/Ajinca

    Chandler/Mohammed/Diop

C'mon MJ! Get on the phone with your boy Ainge ASAP!

    Nice idea ASChin!

They've been rumored for a PF too (S&T Lee/Al Jeff 3 way) so maybe they'd be interested.

Love the chutzpah Chuck but lest we forget, it's only been 2 summer league games. We should at least wait until the preseason to see how much these two have improved for real.

  32. Charlie
    July 6, 2010 at 6:29 pm #

How about we keep the roster we have now, Derrick Brown and Gerald Henderson have performed phenomenal in summer league by showing great improvements on offense and defense. Possibly get rid of Nazr for TJ Ford since Pacers dont want to play him. Expiring contract swap. Then next summer the Bobcats have like 10 million in cap space to sign a good center such as Greg Oden if Blazers let him walk. Al Jefferson is same as Chandler, consistently injured. Diaw will be backup PG this year, and yes he is more than capable of running PG. Gerald will just guard opposing PG

  33. Tyler
    July 7, 2010 at 12:31 pm #

hey does anyone think we should go get Allen Iverson for a year or 2 til we can find a future PG?

  34. Charlie
    July 7, 2010 at 9:56 pm #

Iverson isnt a PG either.. Him and Jax on same team would not work.. they both need their shots and Gerald is most efficient scorer on team and he would see ball even less. We need a PG who penetrates and looks for dish and can D up. Luke Ridnour would be nice.. we need to sign Flip Murray again because he will be cheap. Shannon Brown could play backup PG. A great pickup would be Javaris Crittenton. 6’5 PG that does everything, he has one mess up in career, less than couple of players already on team

  35. Tyler
    July 8, 2010 at 9:38 am #

dang im rlly getting my PG’s mixed up haha but is Flip good enough to be starter? im still hoping we trade for Monta Ellis

  36. ASChin
    July 8, 2010 at 10:40 am #

I think Iverson and JAX could work together fine as long as AI accepts his new role as a bench scorer. Bobcats need all of the gunners that they can get.
Did everybody forget about the team passing the ball around like a hot potato for most of last season?

  37. Jordan
    July 15, 2010 at 9:21 pm #

Why in the world were the Bobcats not in the draft they need some new people!
