Diaw Shipped to Toronto for Cap Space

We can finally put all that talk of Boris Diaw playing the point behind us.  The versatile forward will be shipped to Toronto to play for his former Suns boss Bryan Colangelo.

The Arizona Republic reports that Diaw will be heading to the Raptors in exchange for part of the Chris Bosh trade exception and journeyman (as well as former Bobcat) Dwayne Jones.  Jones would be first acquired by Toronto from Phoenix in a prior trade that would send Hedo Turkoglu to the Suns in exchange for Leandrinho Barbosa.

The trade as reported would save the Bobcats $9 million dollars in cap space this season and next while putting the team in prime position to trade for a starting point guard and fill out their roster without venturing into the luxury tax this summer.

ANALYSIS: After re-signing PF Tyrus Thomas to a 5 year $40 million contract last week, the Diaw move comes as no surprise.  Only a team with cash reserves like the Lakers spends $8 million a year on their backup power forward.  Expect Tyrus to start immediately.  Depending on how Tyrus’s contract is structured, the Bobcats are between $8 and $10 million below the League’s luxury tax threshold for next season of $70 million.  Trading Diaw will not only give the team the ability to find a quality starting point guard via trade this season but also allows the team to potentially pursue a max-type free agent next summer as they currently sit about $20 million under next year’s cap.

as i heard earlier that wolves are looking for someone to take ramon sessions contract, we should be able to do that now, maybe ask for a 1st rounder also or include al jefferson in the trade and ship diop away.

that comment did not make sense. Why would the T'Wolves give us a first rounder and Al Jefferson with Sessions for an exception and Diop. The T'Wolves are not holding a garage sale and everything is on clearance. Sessions could be aquired and would be smart move, however he is not the answer for our starting PG slot. Why not trade for Johnny Flynn, Mike Conley, TJ Ford, Baron Davis. Get rid of Dwayne Jones immediately because he will not contribute.

The Cavs tried to trade for Flynn and the Timberwolves said he is not on the market, but, Mike Connely would be a nice addition!!!

Now that the team has some financial breathing room they'll have more options with potential PGs.

I love the idea of doing an Okafor/Collison/Songailia swap with New Orleans for Tyson and DJ. Trade hurt both teams last summer as CP3 was much better suited to run with Chandler than Okafor while Emeka is a better fit for Larry Brown's half court game. Hornets would save $40 million in future salary commitments as they try to sell their team (ironically the same scenario in which Okafor was dealt last season).

Also, for all you Al Jefferson fans:

Don't count on Big Al being dealt to CLT.

1.) He's a natural PF and the Cats just invested $40 million in Tyrus Thomas to play that position.

2.) He's not a strong defender and Larry Brown doesn't sign off on defensive liabilities.

I like Al Jefferson if you put him next to a stout defensive center like Dwight Howard but not so much in the Bobcats current configuration.

This trade looks like it kind of works out for all parties involved

    • Raptors get a quality big man, with great skills to fit their system

    • Bobcats get some financial freedom to address other needs

    • Boris Diaw will get a bigger role, an up-tempo offense in an international city

    • Dwayne Jones stays in the NBA

    • Tyrus Thomas gets to start

    • Rod Higgins keeps his job

I really like Diaw, but it he seemed a little out of place in the current Cats roster. Best of luck to him in Toronto

Hey all. I come from the Raptors Republic website, Reports in Toronto are that we are sending Jose Calderon to you guys for Diaw and using the exception to acquire Tyson Chandler.

Just rumours at this point but I wouldnt be suprised.

Calderon has always intrigued me…but is that possible, wouldn't we get something else for Chandler?

If we trade Tyson too then what are we gona trade for another center?

Well if it goes through it allows the Bobcats to free up 12 mil in salary in Chandler without taking anything back. The Raps have a trade exception of like 18M meaning it could go down as is, cap space for chandler and Jose for Diaw

okay as long as we get an upgrade at PG but Shaq would be cool but do we have enough for him?

Yep, as we had speculated, the writing was on the wall for Diaw when the Cats moved aggressively to lock up Tyrus Thomas. Derrick Brown's continued development and the acquisition of Dominic McGuire didn't help Diaw's roster security either.

A great move financially for the Cats. Let's see what kind of PG we can get with the cap space now.

LB doesn't like Okafor. If we take him back it's only because a PG is coming w/ him.

i like this trade jose is a pretty good point guard no real weakness shoots amazing from the free throw line. and we address that need. but as of now it looks like it will be jose,jac,gw3,tt,Alexis. dont worry we will make a move in either free agency or make a trade or maybe aleixs is ready haha. i trust the front office. rod,mj,larry all wanna win.

Dr E and ASChin, I call on both of you again…so they did make a move for a PG sooner rather than later, like TODAY :) Which is awesome, I like the move. So with that said, anything else on the horizon…do they go after a center now….or do they go into the season with the lineup they have now, and look to clear some cap space for next year? I still have CP3 on my mind!

Hate to be the party pooper but calderon was the worst defender on a bad defensive team hopefully brown can fix him he's known for getting blown by

this makes me rlly excited but the dang hornets keep saying they wont get rid of Chris nut maybe for a big offer they would have a change of heart gosh i hope what ever there gona do gets done quick

Dr E, ASChin, you guys are the experts….do you expect another deal to get done soon to bring a PG in? I like Collison alot, but seems to me NO might be more willing to part with Chris Paul now, since A) he's not happy if they don't bring in pieces to contend (and we all know how Shinn doesn't like to spend to contend), and B) they know they have a quality starting caliber PG in Collison?

This move only seems good if they can bring in a REAL PG over the next year, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Could we have gotten nothing better back than Dwayne Jones for Diaw? I would have loved to see Jarrett Jack here, he could fit that 'big point guard' role that LB seems to covet.

I get the move, you figured he Diaw was out after we signed TT, and this really means that something else is coming.

What are the figures on Chandler and Diop for Arenas now?

  24. Brett
    July 12, 2010 at 5:51 am #

This is exciting I am glad this went down. We all predicted this the last few days so its kinda cool to see it take shape. Now the conversation shifts to who is the point guard and we defiantly have some wiggle room to get a real player. I don't think they will get rid of Tyson Chandler after this move, call me crazy but i just think letting him go is some vulnerability at the Center position in a tough division with the best center in the game to match up with in Howard. I think Tyson chose not to opt out of his contract maybe with the understanding they really wanted him starting this year, but again just speculation. Some one mentioned Shannon Brown on a different post and i really liked the idea. I think he is a real player and he could add a whole lot of quickness and strike to our offense. He is not the best facilitator with the ball but I think he would do well in our system. His defense is alright but he is still young and I think he would pick up his D fine under Larry Brown. What do you guys think?

  25. Dr. E
    July 12, 2010 at 5:52 am #

I certainly expect another PG to be brought in, most likely through a trade. Right now all we have is DJ, plus maybe Sherron Collins at the end of the bench. No way LB would go into a season with the cupboard that bare at the PG spot.

You guys can disavow yourselves of any notion that NO would trade Collison. Teams just don't trade young, cheap rookies who look that promising — unless they are being used as an enticement to get the other team to also take back an awful awful contract.

I agree, Justin. Paul has the power to force a trade if he's disgruntled. Back home to NC, Jordan brand… It would be a dream come true.

But I think it's more likely we get someone like Sessions, Jarrett Jack or TJ Ford and let them battle it out with DJ for a couple years to see who's the starter while LB drives them both crazy (like Spurrier does with QBs).

okay i know you guys know mre then me so i gotta ask is Jose an upgrade from Felton like he doesnt have as many PPG the Raymond but can someone tell me what he will do tht will make us better

  30. Charlie
    July 12, 2010 at 7:44 am #

How about sign Shaq with cap space. Puts fans in seats and could play him 20 minutes a game, share time with Nazr and then could go small sometimes with Gerald at 4 or Derrick at 4 with Thomas at 5. Calderon nice though, takes care of ball, hits shots, good defense, perfect fit for us. We traded away big men so we definetly need to refill. Reggie evans is ball hawk but we need a starting center now.

  31. Charlie
    July 12, 2010 at 7:46 am #

Calderon is better than Felton, his numbers were down because of Turkoglu last year hogging ball during offensive possessions. Calderon play about 10 less minutes a game than felton and has same stats, hes better at everything than felton except strength.

    July 12, 2010 at 12:28 pm #

Ok so first of all sorry to flood your comments section here but these are the details as of now

Everything is finalized EXCEPT Toronto is sending one other peice to the Bobcats instead of the trade exception, likely Reggie Evans as the Raptors have a log jam at the pf and C spots. Another possibility is Marco Bellinelli, everyone else is pretty much locked in

Mathodical obviously your a raptors fan and am going to criticise(sp?) him because hes gone now. He was hurt last year all year, but before that his defense was nice. I mean if I got hurt hamstring for 82 games I know I am not going to be able to defend.
