Chandler and Ajinca Traded – Wow

A Big, Unexpected Trade With Dallas

The Charlotte Bobcats have traded Tyson Chandler and Alexis Ajinca to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Eduardo Najera, Matt Carroll, and Erick Dampier.

Wow, this came out of nowhere. ESPN coverage here. Bobcats have posted a Release on their site, as well.

We’ll give this further analysis later today, but here are my first thoughts :

• Matt Carroll is back!
• Shaq used to call Erick Dampier “Ericka.”
• This has got to be a set up for another deal… Let’s see what’s next.

I like this trade way better then the one with Toronto, plus ESPN reports that Calderon had a 10% Trade Kicker and that is why MJ backed out of the deal.

Now Chris Paul is a REALLY long shot, but how about:

    Dampier and Diop to Washington

    Arenas and McGee to Charlotte

Washington will save over $65M in current and future Cap Space and we will become a contender. We can then sign Flip and Theo and keep Diaw who can play all positions.

If MJ and Larry Brown can make it work (I believe hthey can), that would be an amazing lineup. The Bobcats can become a legit contender and still under the Luxury Tax limit.

Well glad to have Ajinca out of here, clean up yet another Bobcats draft mistake, but I thought the point was to get rid of Chandler's expiring for something worthwhile?

Our big problem is scoring and we just traded for three players that combined don't score 10 points per game.

Hopefully this is to set something else up, cuz we just got hosed.

Hey what if this trade was a deal to setup for something big like this trade:

    Charlotte Gets:

    Russell Westbrook PG(4 million/year)

    Jamario Moon SF(3 million/year)

Trade Exception for Lebron James(9 million)

    Oklahoma City Gets:

    J.J Hickson PF(1.5 million/year)

    Mo Williams PG(9.3 million/2years)

    Matt Carroll SG(4.3 million/3years)

    Eduardo Najera F(2.8 million/2years)

    Cleveland Gets:

    Jeff Green SF(4.4 million/year)

    Boris Diaw F(9 million/year)

Trade Exception for Raja Bell(3 million)

The trade works but i dont think the Thunder would agree to the trade but who knows crazier things have happened in the NBA !!

    July 13, 2010 at 7:40 am #

No, Br2850, crazier things than that have never happened in the NBA.

Russell Westbrook (especially) and Jeff Green (probably) are untouchable for the Thunder. You just don't trade players who are already making a significatn impact in your rotation (in OKCs case, helping them to the playoffs) while still on their bargain rookie contracts — unless you're getting a top-10 superstar back.

We appreciate the fake trade ideas, they're fun to talk about, but please try to be sane.

Another Trade that works and could really help the bobcats but might not happen:

    Charlotte Gets:

    Rodney Stuckey PG(2.8 million/year)

    Ben Gordon SG(11 million/3years)

    Charlie Villanueva PF/C(7 million/3years)

    Detriot Gets:

    Boris Diaw F(9 million/year)

    Erik Dampier C(Un. 13 million/year)

    CP3! CP3! CP3!

I know the Hornets DO NOT want to trade Chris Paul, but we need a point guard, and we have some pieces to trade. My dream (absolute dream) scenario is CP3 and Meka for Dampier, Najera, Diop, and Diaw. I know Meka isn't a great fit, but the Hornets need to dump salary.

this has to be a setup for another trade one that needs to be done for a pg, glad we got the salary dump we can make moves now, but lets me say this… MATT CARROLL WAS MY BOY SO GLAD HE IS BACK IN THE QUEEN CITY!!!!!!!

I agree that Arenas, although risky, is a better deal than Monta Ellis; I would love to see a deal of Dampier & Diop for Arenas and McGee (WAS saves over $65M and Bobcats become a legit contenders).

However, Mo Williams has been on the block and the Cavs will most likely rebuild, regardless of what the owner said in his email.

How about Mo Williams, Anderson Varejao and Delonte West (just $500K guaranteed) for Nazr and Dampier's contract. Varejao can start at Center, then they could try and get Brad Miller with the MLE as a backup Center.

Baseliners, it's been a wild couple of days. The only thing I think we can say for sure it that something else is clearly in the works. I have to believe that Dampier's expiring contract is going to be involved in a big trade in the coming days. Probably involving Diaw, but not necessarily — seems like Jordan may be trying to swing for the fences here.

There's certainly a huge dose of wishful thinking involved, but I can't shake the feeling that Jordan is trying to pry CP3 from New Orleans. That franchise is in disarray and there are obviously ties between CP3 and Jordan/Carolinas.

And if it falls through, then at least we can just waive Dampier and get right as far as salary cap goes.

  11. Ben
    July 13, 2010 at 12:53 pm #

    Dr. E-

What about Dampier's waivable contract for Monta Ellis & a pick?

And is it safe to assume Dampier and Diaw will not be on the opening day roster?

  12. RobC
    July 13, 2010 at 1:56 pm #

That trade with Detroit is not going to work, the Bobcats need to trade with a team in rebuilding mode, i.e. Golden State or Cleveland. That being said, it looks like our best two options could be Monta Ellis or Mo Williams. I would also love for the Bobcats to inquire about Chauncy Billups, Ty Lawson seems like a keeper for Denver.

Everyone here seems optimistic and for that I'm grateful.

But does anybody realize that the Bobcats just traded (what amounts to) the #2 overall selection in the 2004 draft (Emeka Okafor) AND a 2010 first rounder for Matt Carroll, Najera and an expiring contract?

That, my friends, is why you MUST have a long term plan as an organization.

CP3 sounds more and more like a pipe dream every day. Shinn just fired general manager Jeff Bower — supposedly for Bower's willingness to trade Chris Paul. Shinn has now elevated his son to the role of active GM.

Can only imagine what the call between Chad Shinn and Jordan would be like but would expect it to have all of the nuance of an impromptu Texas Hold 'Em game played by patients in the Head Trauma ward.

Plus, does anybody even want CP3 anymore?

Think about it, he's openly talking about recruiting Carmelo to go to the Knicks in 2012 and has just dumped his former agency to sign on with Lebron James's crew last week – all while still under contract with his current team (who, might I add, are paying him north of $14 million a year). Not exactly a team-first player. Even if Paul comes to Charlotte, don't expect him to be anything more than a two year rental.

Ah, to be a Bobcat fan. I'm starting to understand the mind of Lebron. A frontrunner's life is that of blissful, painless ignorance.

If you read the ESPN report linked above in Mike's article, it mentions that the cats have expressed interest in Ramon Sessions from the TWolves. I figured they'd go after one of the 10 million point guards Minn has…did you know they are about to sign Luke Ridenour?? Anyway, still want Paul, but for the short term, Sessions might do the trick…maybe they offer CP3 a huge contract next year?

okay how does anyone think Monta Ellis fits in LB's system. He is not a PG at all, he takes way too many shots. The system he is in boosts his numbers just like the Suns and Knicks players. I can definetly see Dampier, 1st rounder, and possibly Diaw for CP3 and a player they want to get rid of. Arenas could be dealt for Dampier contract. Thing thing about this is that Dampier is non-gaurunteed so a team would take him for someone big on their team because they want cap relief such as the Hornets. They are trying to lower their cap because they need financial relief and now CP3 wants out. He is from this area so he would welcome it and possibly sign extension because its a championship caliber team with him. MJ and LB already have something in works obviously or they wouldn't have made trade. Najera was good pickup because he hustles non-stop. Matt Carroll is not good but it was someone we needed to take back to get "the contract". Dampier will be gone because MJ and LB understand this team is legit contender with a 3rd star such as CP3 or Gilbert Arenas (NOT MONTA ELLIS)

  19. Tyler
    July 13, 2010 at 3:24 pm #

how do we know if we trade for Chris Paul he wont leave for New York i mean can we trust him to be loyal to NC

  20. Ben
    July 13, 2010 at 3:27 pm #

How is Arenas any better of a fit? A horrific contract for a selfish player who is terrible in the locker room. He doesn't spread the ball and he shoots too much at a low percentage. Monta is a much better defender and a better pure scorer. LB can work his magic, and we'll have one of the most athletic teams in the league with Monta-SJax-Crash-Thomas-(fill in center)

  21. Brad
    July 13, 2010 at 3:27 pm #

A straight up trade involving Boris Diaw and Jose Calderon could still happen, since both make about the same next year within 120%. If that does happen, we would use Najera to replace Reggie Evans and keep Dampier to have a pretty decent team. I know CP3 would like to come here, but I just don't think giving them damp, diaw, and diop without taking back something terrible or throwing in multiple picks/cash considerations to make something work. Hopefully we can get cp3 tho and free up cap space to make a run at horford next year to have an elite starting lineup in

CP3, Jack, Crash, Tyrus, Horford – with Henderson, Augustin, and Brown locking down the 6 – 8 in the rotation.

  22. Deesdale

Dampier's contract is like a blank tile in Scrabble…

  23. Charlie
    July 13, 2010 at 4:55 pm #

Really Arenas is selfish.. check the stats buddy. Ellis cannot defend, and ellis not better scorer. You must have Arenas confused with somebody else because when healthy hes a top 15 player in league and would become best player on our team. Monta would be third best if came to team and would hurt us by taking bad shots. Read Arenas stats before you say Ellis better. Also Arenas wins games when healthy and hits big shots all the time. He had one slip and everybody says he is bad guy, didnt that happen to JAX and noone here talks shit about him.

Hello?!? Did you guys not see what I wrote earlier? They are interested in Ramon Sessions!! If they make a deal for him, it will be for the yr. I think this team is going to make a run at Paul next year.

  25. Charlie
    July 13, 2010 at 5:25 pm #

We heard that their interested in Ramon Sessions, he no better than DJ. just a score first PG. Ramon is for system in which he can do what he wants like he did with Bucks, he cant in LB system. I agree with Dr. E, something big is brewing.. CP3 knows he can win with Jax and Gerald and make thomas a 16 ppg scorer

  26. mike15
    July 13, 2010 at 5:49 pm #

    Dr. E – I hope you're right.

The Cats need to do something to make some progress. The move looks like a nice effort to shake off some dead weight in contracts, while freeing space for a big acquisition. Let's hope something like that can happen.

Chris Paul would be awesome! Ramon Sessions, would be serviceable. Other than that, I'm not sure who I'd like to see start at the Point for the Bobcats.

New Bobcats so far this summer:

    Dominic McGuire

    Eduardo Najera

    Matt Carroll

    Erick(a) Dampier – Probably Waived

    Darius Miles – Possible Signing

We've got to see more than that from Higgins, Jordan, and Brown.

iv got a question someone said something about Chris Paul has spurned Charlotte once already and i was wondering wat he meant

  28. Charlie
    July 13, 2010 at 6:21 pm #

CP3 doesnt have anything in his contract saying if he can spurn anybody. We all keep describing possible situations for what Bobcats do, lets just hope they do something because as of right now it is not playoff team, lets pray we get a superstar.. If bobcats would have made this trade about a week or two ago Dampier's contract would have twice the value

  29. Charlie
    July 13, 2010 at 7:46 pm #

I agree that CP3 becoming Bobcat is a long-shot of a possibility. Lets hope if he does it is not a rental and finds out he can win in charlotte. If he goes there Bobcats would immediately become a top 4 team in East(with addition of center).

Paul just signed on with Lebron's "agency" and is already talking "Big 3" with the Knicks in 2012. 'Nuff said.

Logically, yes but I'm beginning to believe that logic is best reserved for professional basketball teams other than the Bobcats.

  34. mike15
    July 13, 2010 at 11:58 pm #

Y'know Tyler, I think Chris Paul would enjoy playing in Charlotte. The fans would love him and the team would win more than the Hornets.

Then in two years, Charlotte can feel just like Cleveland when Paul heads out to NYC.

These guys don't train as hard as they do just to play ball… They want the perks of fame, fortune, and celebrity status. New York can offer a lot more of that than the Queen City, unfortunately.

  36. RobC
    July 14, 2010 at 1:22 am #

I keep saying that this deal can be the best move for the Bobcats or the worst, depending what comes next. The best avaliable optionas right now, for any combination of Dampier, Diaw, Nazr and/or Diop are:

    1.) Mo Williams/Anderson Varejao/Delonte West ($500K contract)

2.) Gilbert Arenas/Javale McGee (Risky but my favorite)

3.) Monta Ellis/Andris Biedrins (Doubt it happens at this point)

Other moves that might make sense:

4.) Devin Harris for Diaw only (not sure if a good fit). NJ just signed Jordan Farmar and could use a versatile PF, plus it saves them about $9M, and puts them in the race for CP3 in 2012.

5.) Chris Paul/Emeka Okafor (Basically out of the question and nothing more than a dream, but let me added, at least as a rental)

6.) Chauncey Billups/Nene Hillario (another dream scenario, it depends on what Denver wants to do with the Melo situation. If Melo don't sign the extension, he might be traded and they might begin to rebuild, Ty Lawson seems like their future PG).

  37. Justin
    July 14, 2010 at 1:29 am #

Just saw that Det offered something for Chandler and it was most likely either Rip or Prince…given that, I would think MJ has a bigger plan ahead. I'd give up Chandler for Rip, maybe Prince…

  38. RobC
    July 14, 2010 at 1:50 am #

With Cleveland ofering Lowry an offer sheet, they might be a good partner for the Bobcats.

Dampier and Nazr for Mo Williams, Varejao and West ($5ooK guaranteed) could work fine. Byron Scott and CP3 have been flirting with the opportunity of getting back together. With Dampiers and Nazr's expiring they have other pieces to make a tempting offer to NOH for CP3.

Unfortunately the Bobcats have none other than Gerald Wallace, plus Larry Brown will NEVER take back Okafor's contract.

  39. RobC

OK, now the observer reports that the Bobcats will sign Shaun Livingston. i'm begining to worry!!!

  40. Dr. E
    July 14, 2010 at 3:53 am #

Agree Mike, just tweeted similar sentiment about what the Livingston signing means for DJ — i.e. Livingston was signed to be the backup and DJ can now be used in the deal Jordan is working on.

Though I don't think the deal that's being worked on is with Minnesota for Sessions. I'm still thinking something else…

  43. Ben
    July 14, 2010 at 5:06 am #

I would trade Dampier, Diaw, and a first rounder plus for CP3 and possibly Emeka any day! Even if just for 2 years, CP3 is more valuable then anything we'd get for Dampier or $13M cap space. He'd rejuvinate Charlotte's fan base and make us instant Eastern Conference or even championship contenders

    CP3 – SJax – Crash – Tyrus – Meka/Naz

    That's hard to beat…

seems like everyone in this post are still talking about trades for a starting pg.

okay….if either arenas or chris paul come. they will definitely be our starter…but with the signing of shaun livingston….I don't think it will be a bad idea starting him.

    low post scoring. dunking. passing.

i know there might be a chance that he will pop his knee again….but at least he is on the team which he popped his knee againist!!! (LOL)

boosting his confidence by starting him.if he ever get to 80% of the level that was expected few years ago. not a bad bet at all by the cats!

  47. Justin

Honestly, I can't say I've seen Sessions play much, given he's been in small markets such as Milwaukee and Minnesota over the past 2 years. Anyone know much about his game, if he were to come here?

  48. Charlie
    July 14, 2010 at 5:59 am #

Sessions isnt nice, his stats were overblown in Milwaukee just like Mo Williams stats were because that franchise coaches have let them roam free. LB wouldnt take back Emeka.

  49. RobC
    July 14, 2010 at 6:13 am #

    Justin –

No, that is not enough. NOH has been offered a lot of talent such as: OJ Mayo, Devin Harris, Caron Butler, Jason Kid plus expiring contract such as Dampier's for instance and they've rejected the trades. They want an impact playaer, 1st Rounders and Star prospects. And it makes perfect sense for them to ask such a high price, since they are trading the best PG in the NBA and a future Hall of Famer.

  50. Dr. E
    July 14, 2010 at 7:02 am #

I wouldn't put too much stock in CP3 talking about a 'big 3' in NYC with Carmelo and Amare from this weekend. He was at Carmelo's wedding and god knows, we've all said some ridiculous, wishful stuff to our buddies at wedding receptions.

On the other hand, if it goes well for LebronWadeBosh in Miami, it does make me fear that more young superstars will go this "AAU" route in combining talents in big market cities for slightly lower contracts.

I imagine that any team that trades for CP3 will be looking for some assurances that he will sign an extension with them. If not, you guys are right, he's probably not worth the risk to trade for and can continue to be unhappy in NO through the rest of his contract…
