Allen Iverson & Bobcats Team Chemistry

Standard

iverson-chemistry

We have heard many arguments against the signing of Allen Iverson over the past few of weeks. Much of the opposition rooted in the concern that Allen Iverson is going to destroy the Bobcats’ “team chemistry”.

Now, aside from the fact that this Bobcats team is basically brand new, I can’t imagine the “chemistry” being so vitally important to this franchise. Our team history is overwhelming horrible. Why, all of a sudden, does a thing like team chemistry matter?

What would make the Bobcats team chemistry so bad if we sign Allen Iverson? Is it going to be from all the games we’ll win? Or is it because of all the slam-jams Gerald is going to be putting down? Maybe it’s because DJ Augustin is going to be miserable playing with a potential Hall of Famer.

If we don’t have team chemistry, we can’t have team chemistry. It is as simple as that.

It’s easy to sum it up if you’re just talking about team chemistry. We’re sitting here, with Allen Iverson about to be signed to the CHARLOTTE BOBCATS, and we’re talking about team chemistry. I mean listen, we’re sitting here talking about team chemistry, not winning games, not winning games, not winning games, but we’re talking about team chemistry. Not winning basketball games.

Allen Iverson is going to be playing professional basketball IN CHARLOTTE NORTH CAROLINA but we’re talking about team chemistry man. How silly is that?

I know Allen Iverson is supposed to lead by example and I know it is important, I honestly do, but we’re talking about team chemistry. We’re talking about team chemistry man. We’re talking about team chemistry. We’re talking about team chemistry. We’re not talking about the Charlotte Bobcats having a WINNING SEASON. We’re talking about team chemistry. When you come to Time Warner Cable Arena, and watch Allen Iverson score 42 points, are you going to be talking about team chemistry? Hey I hear you, it’s funny to me too, hey it’s strange to me too but we’re talking about team chemistry man, we’re not even talking about winning games, when it actually matters, we’re talking about team chemistry.

How the hell would Allen Iverson make the Charlotte Bobcats better by improving team chemistry?

hahah. nice allusion. i want iverson bad. maybe I need to wipe the stars out of my eyes, but w/e. charlotte was last in scoring last year. playoff teams dont have that trait. and our d is decent but not good enough to make up for that. AI is the answer to this. pun intended.

    Team chemistry is important, actually.

However, i don't see Iverson hindering the Bobcats' chemistry at all. If Felton is not resigned (or a sign and trade is done for a post scorer) and the rest of the roster remains the same, then AI could come in a be a perfect fit in Charlotte.

I have never been a AI fan in particular, but i totally support a deal for Allen Iverson if he will play for similar money that the 'Cats would have had to payed for Felton. I believe his role in Charlotte would be to provide scoring for one or two good years while the Bobcats' young backcourt of Augustin & Henderson develops. It makes sense.

For team chemistry's sake — which would be better: having DJ sit behind Felton, or behind Iverson? Signing Iverson rather than Felton sends the message that Augustin is the future PG, rather than the ambiguity of both keeping both young PGs on the roster.

i wonder who lead this "chemistry" talk *coughbonnellcough* but im still trying to think out the minuets/possible trades.

the best (and most obvious) move is to move felton for a backup PF (and a pick) and pencil DJ in as the franchise's PG by next year. Raja will prolly be let go at the end of next year, and if Iverson is still under contract for that year, we could look like this:

    DJ/blahblahblah

    Iverson/Henderson

    Wallace/Brown/Radman

    Diaw/acquired in trade for felton/Brown

Chandler (if he can still walk by then)/Frenchie *coughbeastcough*/Diop

thats already a pretty good 2010-2011 team, but lets say we somehow got anthony randolph for felton this year:

DJ/Jefferson (is he still under contract?)

    Iverson/Bell/Henderson

    Wallace/Brown

    Diaw/Randolph/Radman

    Chandler/Frenchie/Diop

this team looks good. the major problem is still the Iverson/Bell situation. i do like the idea of starting Raja and bringing in Iverson to "save the day". that would most deff win him 6th man of the year, but i dont see that happening.

overall, Iverson will be a great marketing addition to the team. he will bring in money, fans, and most importantly, recognition. not to mention that the man can play basketball.

but from a basketball prospective, this isnt a great long term idea.

by shipping felton, you do lose a team captain. although inconsistent, he was a above average PG who got the job done. you also lose a UNC product and a face in the community. this could be bad because the heel fans wouldnt come to the games.

of corse, all of this depends on the talks with felton. obviously if we can somehow get Iverson cheeper, we go with him.

    and btw, love the post.

  5. The Bobcats have nothing to lose. They are not going to win LESS games with Iverson. All the "chemistry" arguments and "question marks" would matter if our team had a legacy to uphold. But this is THE CHARLOTTE BOBCATS. A franchise known for nothing.

Aside from, of course, being mentioned on Entourage.

Deesdale, I loved the video. I do hate the fact that he didn't said the Bobcats beat the Lakers.

Reggie…believe me; I'm praying for Golden State to give Randolph for Felton. I will take that stright up any day. That would definetly be the best case scenario.

I do have to say that if we trade Felton (the best option by far right now) AI would be better of as our PG. I honestly beleive he will do anything in his power to make all the AI haters swallow their words. Also he would be a model for DJ, I think AI's style fit better with DJ and making AI a PG will increase our chances everynight, Ai is a great distributor. Over 7 assists per game.

    It would be:

    Allen Iverson

    Raja Bell

    Gerald Wallace

    Boris Diaw

    Tyson Chandler

    Second Unit:

    D.J. Augustine

    Gerald Henderson

    Vlad Radmanovic

    Anthony Randolph

    Gana Diop

We also have: Dontell Jefferson, Derrick Brown, Alexis Ajinca & Nazr Mohamed (while it last) from the bench if needed.

  7. Bobcat orange?

This is probably the most exciting news the Bobcats have ever had. What does chemistry matter on a team that doesn't win? Do we pay them to be friends? Change our name to the Charlotte Carebears? Pssh. WINS are the only measurable currency in the NBA. Iverson will give us more.

When do you think this will be official?

  8. reggie

lets examine this from a long-time basketball prescriptive:

the first thing everybody brings up in the "Iverson to charlotte" talks, is of corse the reunion of Larry Brown and Iverson. i have no doubt that that will cause a problem, and an older Iverson may cause less trouble than the notorious Iverson from Philly.

whats the problem here? who can EFFECTIVELY say that LB will be here 2 or 3 years from now?

also, there is no doubt that Iverson is in the twilight of his carrer. sure, he may have 2 (or 3 if hes in tune and has truly changed) good years left on him–if that. he may be done after this season. so investing in a wrung out star should never be a good option.

so what do you do after his year, or two years are up? hopefully DJ would be the second-coming of AI, and maybe Henderson can be one of our few dependable lotto picks, but thats not a given. as unrealistic as it seems, DJ could prove to be a total flop and make us regret letting go of Felton. but thats very unlikely.

the good thing about signing Iverson to a 2 year deal, is that by then, Nazr and Radman and Chandler would come off our payroll, opening up more chances for us to become a force in free agency.

  9. Disclosure

It may be worth taking a chance with Iverson, but this is a risky move. My concerns are about some of Iverson’s actions in the past. If he is not playing, he is not happy. What if the best five at the end of certain games does not include Iverson. Does he cry to Brown that he is better than the others? What about practice? Will he show up 100% committed to every practice session? If he doesn’t, this is where chemistry becomes an issue.

There are a lot of questions marks. However, the Bobcats need to bring in the fans and if an Iverson signing will bring in the fans and won’t reduce the number of projected victories, he is worth taking a chance on.

guys allen hasn't signed yet because he's lookin at offers from memphis and miami. (look at ESPN Rumor Central) Looks like Rick was right and Dime Magazine was wrong

  11. AI posted a Twitter update that Memphis has indeed made an offer.

Now, we've got two of the league's most strugglin' franchises fighting for The Answer. . .

    AI on Twitter

"Well I am about to begin another workout session. Agent informed me that Memphis made us an offer on yesterday. Stay tuned."

  12. dudemanhey

But IF AI was in serious negotiations with the Bobcats, then it is in his best interest for other teams to be after him as well. Supply & demand. If Memphis and Miami are both after the Answer as well then that only makes his cost increase.

How much did me make last season again? The Bobcats would like to pay him HOW much?

  13. dudemanhey

Of course Iverson wont get 20 mil. Nor is he worht it. But he IS in a situation where posturing, throwing other numbers out, creating speculation as to other teams' offers, and general negotiation tactics can be used in his benefit.

Ray Felton wants more than 5.5 mil a year. Is Allen Iverson worth more or less than him?

I'm just pointing out that Iverson's Twitter remark might be bargaining tool.

  14. J2.0

    Classic!!! article

Team chemistry is important though and though this team was only togather for a short time they played fluid with “chemistry” Yes Iverson could screw that up. But its worth the chance. I am excited about Bobcats basketball year round But if signing AI is what it takes to get the Carolinas excited about this team, then its worth the risk!

  15. Bob

DO THIS MOVE. sometimes you gotta shove ur chips in and take the chance. if u dont take risks well be mediocre forever under the pretense of building a playoff team until 4 years from now when bob johnson's successor decides to move the team to las freakin vegas and well be sitting wondering what went wrong.

  16. Just because the Memphis offer got press doesn't mean the Cats are out of the picture. There was obviously intense negotiations with the Bobcats but we couldn't ink the deal for some reason. My guess is that the team will get sold or we'll get Iverson. Not both.

  17. spectre

They offered 3.5 we can offer almost 3. If AI isn't all about the money like he professes then it should be pretty cut and dried which he should take.
